Usually, place cards are done for each person, one person per place card. However, escort cards may be grouped in couples and families. The difference between escort cards and place cards is that escort cards are typically situated on a table near the entrance to your reception room, listing a guest's table number. Whereas a place card is actually placed on the table designating the seat for the individual. If you are just assigning tables and using the cards as escort cards then you could make them for couples and families so they know what table to sit at. But if you are doing the traditional place cards, with a structured seating chart and assigned seating it is recommended that you make out each wedding place card for each individual (including children).
